The awesome side effect of storytelling is being a part of people's intersecting stories which makes everyone's story even more meaningful and exciting. While catching up with Lisa and Rhonda of PodBlast Charlotte, I was able to catch up with former People of Charlotte feature, Melissa Wineman, who was onsite applying her talents and imagination to the outside of the studio. As you can see from the picture above, Melissa is vibrant in every way.
Tell us more about your current project!
Each month, PodBlast Charlotte invites a local artist to design the outside of their mobile podcast studio and this month, I am the featured artist! There's a lot of symbolism within the artwork and some fun surprises which you will have to come see for yourself! I am also working on watercolor illustrations for a children's book.
How has one opportunity lead to another?
People driving down Monroe Road can see me painting the mural and have watched the progress. As a result, I was commissioned by a passerby for another mural project which I am totally excited about!
Collaborations are so cool! What other collaborations are you wanting to get involved with?
I would love to collaborate with another event, space, or cause to create art with other women who just want an opportunity to be creative with friends, heal through art, and let it all go. Art is so therapeutic and most of us don't give ourselves enough self-care time. Reach out to me if you would like to collaborate or simply have a girl's night at your home—I'll bring the art supplies!

How did your parents encourage the artist in you?
My parents always encouraged me to do what I love - I love anything that gives me the opportunity to create. Dad always drew little drawings with me, and mom taught me about magical mystical things (which I believe helps open your imagination even more). They allowed me to draw murals on my walls growing up, and when I asked to go to art school, they actually supported me.
Alma Mater?
Bachelors of fine arts with a focus in printmaking and drawing from UNC Charlotte.
How did you break into the arts?
I got into the art market basically through research, networking, and perseverance. I applied to several online sites after figuring out which ones would work best for me.
What is your dream career?
I would love to do my art full-time. There's so much I can create and have planned but I have to work full-time still. So, I do art pop-ups and display my work wherever and whenever I can.
Greatest artistic challenges?
To stay motivated to produce artwork while working full-time while trying to have a social life. I would love for art to be more than a hobby!
Why did you choose to live authentically?
After years of not really living authentically and many life lessons, I would have to say being my true self became a priority—being silly, being weird, making people smile everyday! Because nothing good comes from anything negative; spread love and positive vibes because otherwise, what are you doing with your life?
Create and share art because art is never boring. Life without art is boring.
What else brings you joy?
My family, my friends, and the response I get from people when they see and enjoy my work as much as I do!
Favorite spot in Charlotte to hangout?
I do love good beer! Legion Brewery is my favorite by far, conveniently local to where I live. However, I do love a bunch of other local breweries. I love taking my sketch pad to the bar while sipping on a good beer!
If money wasn't an issue, what would you do with your time each day?
Create more art and travel the world, seeking new inspirations and adventures.
Any mentors?
My middle school art teacher at NWSA, Mrs. Barefoot, and also some one whom I've not seen in years but has always pushed me since I worked with him when I was young, TJ Reddy.
Who do you look to for inspiration?
Salvador Dali, Frida Kahlo, Vincent Van Gogh, and nature
Charlotte native?
I was born in Miami but have lived in Charlotte since I was five years old. I've recently moved back to the Plaza Midwood area of Charlotte.
