Vinson Smith: My 500lb Journey

Updated: Mar 27, 2019

My name is Vinson Smith of Charlotte, NC. I am the co-founder of Hard Body Fitness Personal Training Group. My mentor (Terry Davis) and I are currently serving the Charlotte community as fitness specialists at our sports and fitness facility in the University area of Charlotte, NC.

How did your story begin?

In 2007, I weighed in at 500 pounds; 280 pounds more than my current weight of 225 pounds. After my father’s untimely death in 2005, my battle with obesity skyrocketed to another level. I gained over 200 pounds in a matter of months after graduating from high school.

What prompted you to make a life change?

Unfit and unhappy with my life, I decided to make a change. I made a commitment to myself to not only battle my depression, but to fight my food addiction. This was the only way to save my life from a slow suicide.

What or who is the greatest contributor to weight loss success?

To reach any fitness goal, your biggest battle will never be on the gym floor or with a trainer, it is in your mind. Thanks to a cast of friends, family and clients’ support, I have reached my milestone weight of 225 pounds. My weight loss journey has not been easy and I still battle with my food addiction on a day-to-day basis. Knowing how far I have come on this journey serves as constant motivation for me to keep striving for greatness and to inspire others to do the same.

Why do you think it’s important to share your story?

My weight loss journey has given me a lot to look forward to in life; which is why I desire to constantly share my story with others. My personal goal is to use my skills as well as my story to help kids and adults in my community who struggle with the same issues of obesity, food addiction and self-image. I know that there are others out there who need help. It has always been a deep-seeded belief of mine that if you’ve been blessed with a platform it is your responsibility to give a voice to those who may not have one; and since I have been inspired by the world, it's now time to let the world be inspired by me.
